That night I lay in my bunk bed, sleepless. I usually had trouble sleeping anywhere new, and this was certainly new. I was glad for my own sleeping bag, and I was definitely glad I wasn’t on the hard earth in a tent. A pillow would have been nice. Instead, my head rested on my folded cloak, and that was “roughing it” enough for me. Something told me I wouldn’t be using my straightener in the morning.

Trying to ignore the random snoring of other volunteers on the bunks surrounding me, I focused on the noises outside the cabin. It sounded like any other camping weekend and was comforting. Muffled voices in conversation around some campfire carried on the night air. The occasional hoot of an owl out hunting. Later, the howling of coyotes enjoying a midnight romp through a neighbouring field; probably kilometres away, but in the night their laughing barks sounded much closer.

I had a sudden urge to text Ralph. To reach out and connect with him in some way, if only to get a clue to where in the camp he was. But even if I could sneak my phone out of my duffle bag, he wouldn’t have his. It was against the rules to have any modern technology at a larp. And anyway, even when I sent a text to Ralph in the city, he was the king of the one-word response:
